His early foundation in engineering brings technical rigor and a systems mindset to both disciplines.
Long Bio
Matthew is a multidisciplinary designer specializing in architecture, product design, systems design, experience design, writing, and technology. Based in New York City, he has worked with some of the world’s leading design and technology firms to find elegant solutions to complex problems. Matthew believes in creating products and services that are minimal, beautiful, functional, and joyful, and that defining the project in the simplest possible terms is essential to building enduring solutions.
Matthew’s background in architecture, engineering, design, and technology — and his interest in art, writing, and culture — allow him to quickly understand complex problems across a wide range of industries and find elegant solutions in a streamlined and efficient way.
Matthew grew up on a generational family farm in rural Iowa, but is more at home in New York City. He studied aerospace engineering and mathematics before finding his calling in architecture. He is a licensed architect and a member of the American Institute of Architects and several other trade organizations. Matthew has been honing his craft for 26 years.
Matthew is fascinated with how things work, how they are designed and fabricated, and how they are used. He is obsessively thorough and believes that every detail, no matter how small or subtle, matters. He despises excess and inefficiency. His work is direct, precise, and efficient. He’s a stickler for spelling, grammar, and typography. He has a background in art and engineering, and for every hour he sits at his desk designing, he spends an hour in the shop fabricating precision parts or in the field collaborating with people who build.
